TD5 Engine problem

I know this is a VW forum, but you have helped me before with my brothers Land Rover.
Whilst out driving today, going up sutton bank (Yorkshire 1 in 3 ) it started to stutter under load, but got up anyway, drove fine for about 7 miles, then heard a knocking noise from the engine plus loads of smoke from the exhaust, we pulled over and turned it off, checked the oil only to find the dipstick and its hole were smoking, checked the water NONE, put in maybe 8 litres ( the temp gauge showed half, nowwhere near the red), the car then restarted but was knocking really bad, from the big ends or so it sounded, turned it off, checked the oil filler cap just clean oil no water, so the head gasket hadn't gone.
Left it for an hour, restarted it , sounded better even ok on tick over, but if we gave it a bit of throttle, then the knocking returned.
Called the RAC who took it home.
Has anyone any idea's, I have suggested to drain the oil and put fresh in, or is there permanant damage (the engine has done 110,000 miles)
