Radiator fan, aircon electrical problems

Hi, need some help solving some electrical problems on my 91 syncro vanagon(2.1mv). I have no radiator fan stage 1 and 2 or aircon( although all blowers are working fine).
I have tested the radiator fan by shorting across the 3 pin connector to the thermo switch and only one side works(side with blue/red wire not working). I have replaced the resistor pack(courtesy of Aidan, top service by the way), fitted and its still not working properly with only one radiator fan speed running. Is this a relay problem? And why is my aircon now affected? or is this coincidence?
cheers
shakey

Shakey,
Not sure if this helps.........
but only this week I have been sorting a cooling fan gremlin on my 1.6 d 1982... mine has x2 - 2 pin - thermo switches for low and high speed and what baffled me was that a later 3 pin switch had been installed and wired in using wxisting loom connections - and i thermo sitch unconnected - and a "spare" single live wire - - and it took me a while to devil out and reconcile the wiring diagram to what I saw on the van.... anyway.....
For my stage 2 to kick in stage 1 needs to be running to complete the circuits between thermo switch/relay and fan motor and fire up the higher speed - it may be the same needed to spark yours up
AC systems need airflow to work - whan fans dont work then they will only refridgerate air over 30 mph - the airflow of forward motion doing what the fan does when standing still
it may be the same for yours..
Hope you get fixed

ps what was behind that green door ????

Did the original resistor block have three connection with four wires going to them? Which should be for vehicles with aircon which has a three speed fan controlled by two relays. One is in relay holder 5 and the other is either mounted on the A post or clipped to the fuse box.
