Drivers door lock unsecure

Hi Guys

Found out the other day that the drivers door lock will open using any old key. As long as the key is thin enough to fit into the key hole it will open it.

Any way of fixing the barrel without the need for a new one and another different key??

Have a look here

Oh, and make sure you've got a big tub of patience handy and a fair batch of fiddliness while you're at it!

Am I right in thinking Si Baxter does barrel overhauls? (just in case I lose my patience)

Be a lot easier just to buy a new handle complete with lock & key- take about 5 mins to fit--JK & GSF do 'em £20 odd-I think--

£47.50 plus VAT to be exact .But surely that means yet another lock with yet another different key??

Yes, you're right Shaun. Getting hold of one or two used ones even with out the keys for them might be a better bet - then you have a pool of spares to select the best/serviceable/appropriate ones to make the lock fit your key. The bits inside are only flimsy brass sliders and get seized up thro lack of lube - or corroded (brass next to aluminium in a damp environment! perfect for electrolytic corrosion!) - then forced when the key isn't quite in - starts wearing grooves in the lock/handle aluminium body and bingo the lock is not secure or really functioning.

you could do what i done.

take off the door handle fill the the key hole with liquid metal ( or any good filler ) then swap it with the handle on the passenger door.

job done.

well it was ideal on mine. as the passenger door handle & lock are like new. and its one less key on my fob. i just lock and unlock the passenger door from the inside.

only trying to help :?

Removed both handles today and dismantled the barrels. Cleaned them up, noticed groves in the drivers handle that was causing the security breach ( ) . So cleaned up and reassembled the barrels but swapped them over and now the doors are secure again.

Oh yes and I got the handles blasted and repainted at work while I was at it 8)
