Offside front brake back plate

Hi everyone...I've just had my MOT and I'm afraid it failed due to no 'offside front brake back plate'.

I've had a look on justkampers and they have rear brake back plates but no front brake back plates...but they do have a 'offside brake front dust shield'. Sorry for yet another dumb question but can anyone tell me if these front shields are basically the same as the rear back plates. In other words has my mechanic chosen the wrong words sort of thing

I've never had front disc shields for the 5 years I've had the van (rusted away in a former life). Never had an advisory or a failure
E D I T: Additionally there are early and late disc shields too. Brickwerks sell late, Justkampers sell early

To my knowledge these do not and never have formed part of the MOT test though open to be corrected.
On the rear possibly as brake assembly fixes to it, but front no, since they are merely a sheild (ones you noted on JK) and have no impact/effect on braking.
PS - on mine, one is missing and the other on its way and gone through 5 tests without a hitch!

This is the reason for the fail as written on my certificate:
Offside front brake back plate (s) securing device missing [3.5.1i]

Get under there and look around. At worst you just have to remove whats left of shield. They may have taken the view that if its flapping around it could become lodged or jammed in between caliper and disc or somewhow create a hazard? Can't see any other reason why they could fail it. Its not a test part in itelf but without looking, none of us will ever know.

me thinks the tester has seen one on the other side then noticed the missing one and failed it.... remove the other side and re-submit for a test?....

Yup, although does say securing device missing. Possibly a small bolt loose. Either way, back plate has nowt to do with action of brakes so if its corroded, just remove whats left or of its loose - reaffix.
Mind you, if you'd looked under there, you;d know all this even before you took it for an MOT

the wacky description could just be because thats all that available in the new mot system

i've had some beauties that i've had to ring the tester to confirm what it meant
as rightly stated the front plates are not important from a safety point of view unless they are hanging off and interfering with pipes etc. perhaps you should point this out to your tester as he may simply not know. at least he'll clear up what he sees as the problem
