Hi

Finally found I have a problem with earthing on my bus I have had gearbox out and back in and fitted a new starter motor but it makes an awful noise until i put a jump lead from neg on battery to crankcase then it sounds good like it might fire up.

Can you tell me what earth straps there should be on my t25 2ltr air cooled I can see 1 on gearbox mounts only and have cleaned this up.
Is there an engine earth I have overlooked.

Really close to getting this beasty running after 3 weeks off the road.

Can I run a new earth from somewhere. Electrics are not my strong point I have to say. :?

cheers for any help

The van chassis acts as the main conductor between the starter motor and the battery. From that you can see that you need two earth points - from battery negative to chassis (located close to the battery) and from the engine (or on the alternator body since this is bolted to the engine) to the chassis. I would check/renew both paying particular attention to the condition of any captive threads (i.e not rusty) and that the surrounding area is free from dirt and corrosion. If necessary, apply some WD40 or vaseline after you have cleaned the areas up.
