Welcome to the club.
Sorry but you appear to have bought the wrong vehicle.

The 1.6D sure ain't fast, but it should reach 100 km/h and downhill even more

(cruising speed still is about 90 km/h)
So basically, the engine needs looking over ...does it get air and fuel at all times, are the valve gaps correct, is compression ok, etc

No you should get 65, maybe 70 with a strong tail wind
Get some one to put their foot down on the acc. pedal while you check to see if the throttle opens all the way to the stop.
Or get rid of the pop top, throw away your interior, and put some go faster stripes on.

pump the tires up for an instant rush
The golf motors are very popular this side and cheap, and plenty cheap spares, jap import etc.

Right vehicle, wrong expectations.
Swap for an AEF 1.9D out of a Polo etc. Or a 1Y out of a golf etc. 24% more torque, cheap (£200 or so) and fits like a dream. No need to change the gearbox. Trouble is with the turbo conversions, you need loads of extra bits and expertise, plus you have to change the gearbox. Unless you like smoke, in which case a turbo is good.

I install racing stripes for a living on Mustangs and vipers etc.
I could hook you up with a nice fat set of stripes, it may fool your brain and people on the road that you have a monster engine
but you choose to crooze as you are too kool for skool.
Try super unleaded too.

Superb.....

No point lying to the shiney, nice new person.

If you want fast buy a 2.5tdi T4 and get it chipped if you're still disappointed ... there, I can't be more honest than that

I'm under no illusions that I have anything monster or fast. But I don't get tailgated by truckers any more. Besides which my van has "go slower" Autohomes stripes as standard.
