Drive Shaft on an Automatic - Is it the same as the one on a manual

My mechanic has advised me that it would be cheaper to source a pair of complete drive shafts rather than replace the CV joints which he's confirmed are worn. I've seen some on Ebay but don't know if they would be the same as the autobox ones

Any ideas?

errr...get new cv joints. Yep, may be £££ but you are replacing with second hand on ebay......which may last days/months/years.......

no not the same as manual.on autos one is a tad longer than the other.like em says best get new cv joints.a lot easier to source than auto shafts..

Maybe you mechanic doesnt want the job...
CV's are pretty simple to change.. for anyone willing to get there hands dirty
as said the auto ones are different side to side and to manuals... the CV joints are all the same though, you aint going to get a "new" assembly in any case (unless VW still offer them, but wont be cheap)

Yep, Si's right the mechanic's copping out ... or just used to C untos

New driveshaft assemblys poss available from VW.. about £200 for the shorter one and £110 for the longer one...

Yeah could be right about the mechanic. He's a nice bloke but he has more experience with Aircooled and bugs than the T25. When I thought it might have been the gearbox he told me he wouldn't be able to do it.

Think ill get a new set of CVs

Is it wiser to do them all at the same time or just replace the one that's worn

The chances are they've all done the same mileage ....

Unless there's damage to the driveshafts themselves, I see no benefit in buying second-hand driveshafts. Let's face it, you have no guarantee the CV's will be in any better condition

That said, I do have a pair of driveshafts (from a 1.9 auto) with CV's still attached that are going spare. I can quite happily confirm that at least one of the joints was beginning to knock on roundabouts so will need replacing (or at least regreasing). But if you need new shafts as well you might be able to make use of some of the CV joints

I think my shafts are fine. I'm going to order up some new CV's I think and tell him to get on with it, if he makes a fuss ill take it to Syncronutz - Are the JK ones any good?

Well CV joints are the same as Bay window ones so nothing new to him there.....

Maybe speak with Syncronutz... I am sure they would be more than happy to help...

roll your sleevs up and have a go it is quite a simple job with just a few basic tools

Just incredibly messy. Wear latex gloves and change them every few minutes or it'll take weeks to get the grease out of your fingernails. Put loads in there when refitting - more than the miserly tube often supplied with CV joints. Pot is only £6 from halfords.
