standing on the window ledge

Hi guys

Finally got all bits back together after clutch replacement, and new starter motor.

BUT the damn thing wont turn over the starter makes a whining sound but is not turning over the engine, it sounds like it is jammed but on what??

I am sure I put everything back together correctly when I changed the clutch I did take the flywheel off as I had to change the spigot bearing and I got the flywheel skimmed.
Flywheel went back on and tightened down up to correct torque, clutch went in the right way round and tightened the pressure plate up correctly, used a clutch aligning tool. Gearbox had new release bearing and oil seal and slid on with no issues so I believe that is all good. only thing I did not change was the oilite bush for starter motor.

How can I check what is jammed? Could I jack the bus up and try spinning wheels??

I am really hacked off now as I have been off the road for 3 weeks and it is my daily drive.....

Someone please give me some inspiration before I jump off the window ledge....

Jay a  depressed man

Calm down dear .... it's only a light commercial !

Sounds like your starter is goosed. Does the engine itself turn over with the nut on the end of the crank pulley ? Try cleaning all the starter connections ... inc the nose mount earth strap on the gearbox.

Ian.

Hi guys

I have a new starter motor so it is not that that is goosed, I have taken plugs out and starter off and tried turning the flywheel through starter gap.
Flywheel moves fine I thought it might have been jammed. Problem must lie with starter not meshing with teeth on fly wheel.

I have not changed the copper bush, could this be causing problems??
Starter sounds like its being strangled when I turn key.

Does the pinion on the starter sit in the bush all the time or only when cranking?

I am trying to stay calm, I have come back in off window ledge but am thinking of going up on the roof!!!

Jay

The pinion is supported in the bush at all times, the drive gear springs out to engage with the flywheel when energised.

Ok So what could cause the starter to not turn over? I will have to check battery as it was charged up overnight but I guess it could be knackered!!!

Knackered bush, duff connections, duff 'new' starter (most are only reconditioned which means it could have been tested found good and painted)

sI don't know what type you have but most starters are driven into engagement when the inertia of the starter cog part leaves it stood standing when the starter motor bursts into life. The fact that it is sitting on a spiral shoots it into mesh with the flywheel as it tries to catch up with the motor. Clearly any lack of battery umph will defeat this as will rust, oil or shizer on the spirol or shaft. A bent shaft or some kind of misalignment will also cause problems. As already stated the battery needs to be upto it. The moving parts must be free to move and require only the very lightest of oil if any. You should see the dog pull in when tested out of the vehicle but make sure the body of the starter is held tight or it will spin and maybe cause injury or short circuit. Good luck anyway.
Cheers
