Idle Stabilizing Box

First of all thanks to kevtherev and toomanytoys for their help and advice.
The running problems I described in my previous post now appear to have been down to the idle stabilizing box.
I have by passed the box by disconnecting the two leads and joining them together to complete the circuit.
My question is...what exactly does the box do, other than what it says on the tin?
Do I need to replace it or can I live without one?
and finally, if I do need to get a new one wheres the best place to find one?

What engine was it again? if air cooled leave it off... might need to up the idle speed a fraction come winter..

All it does is create some "advance" to the timing at to maintain idle speed at a constant level (more often than not they fial or idle is set above the units defalt level in any case...)
