425 gearbox change- encouragement needed!

My 4 speed diesel box has died, bouncing out of 4th on the slightest hill and now no reverse. I don't have access to a garage that can rebuild it so I 'm looking for a replacement unit. The engine is 1.6D n/a so I only go slow anyway...
I can find here a 4 speed petrol box unknown, not guarenteed off the street for around 200-250 pounds
I can get a 5 speed petrol box off a more reputable dealer for around 400 pounds.
My... guess... based on wiki and other threads are that a petrol 5 speed box will have a lower 1st gear ratio than the petrol 4 speed so my slow diesel will be reasonably happy with it and if I ever get fast I can use 5th.
I don't have to do the work myself, a good friend who has access to a full garage will put it in for me so I don't have to worry about access to specialized tools.
I have three questions...
1) Is my feeling that the five speed box a better option?
2) From other threads I understand I need...
a... to change the bell housing to mine
b... to change the gear linkage and gear leaver
c... to change the imput shafts around
What else do I need to get from the donor car?
Many thanks for any help. My car is lying up and I'm hoping if this can work to get it done in the next few days
Many thanks,
