Disappearing coolant

Hi Everyone,
I would appreciate your help! Just returned from a week away in the van which was serviced just before we set off (coolant at the max level) covered just over 500 miles in total and the coolant level is now 1cm above the minimum level. Drove on all road types using all of the gears (not just long stretches in 5th) no real drop off in power and temperature needle sat in the mid position in front of the LED for the majority of the time. On our return journey the weather was hot and the van drove well covering 150 miles carrying 3 adults, 2 children, 1 dog and 1 trailer at 60/65 MPH once again with no temperature problems. The engine is the original 1.6TD.
Grateful for your suggestions and ideas / areas to check. I undestand the petrol engines are prone to water gasket failure, is this also true for the diesels?
