Hi all,

I have a problem with me followers..(2.0cu engine).

It sounds like a follower on cylinder no 3 is not working correctly..ie is it rattling a little on tickover ~(taps) and goes away when the engine is revving.....I know its a follower as when I start it ...it sounds like the timing is out (its not..) and then it dissapears when the engine fires (obviously oil is geting in it then..)

Would i be right in thinking its either air locking or needs replacing. Engine has an oil change every 2k...so the oil is clean...The last time I changed the oil I had trouble getting a MANN filter...so  I had to use a federal mogul filter instead (Champion). Do you think this is related....I have always used MANN filters on it without issue....Could it be a coincedence do you think....

I have used Mobil 15/40 Mineral oil on the last change. (Not a cheap oil)....Any suggestions before I start pulling it apart... :(

Glenn.

could be a lazy tappet as you suggest
Have you tried resetting it?

changing a follower is relatively easy on a CU
If it persists after a good run, then it's make your mind up time.

WHS^^^^

Has it been for a run, as short trips dont help..
Poss to just reset the tappets to 1/2 (half) turn in from just touching will help.. if not its poss that the lifter is tired and requires replacing..

Hi,

Thanks for your replies..

I know when I have changed followers and cams on upright motors it was always beneficial to change the cam and followers together. Does this apply to a CU motor ?
Also do you think it is best to change all 8 of them. I would imagine it is a case of rocker shaft out, tubes and then using a suction cup to pull the followers out....am I right...

I have tried setting the tappets but I can push that particular push rod in with my finger....seems weak to me...where as all others are hard...

If I change the followers who is the best to use.....I have heard a few funny tales of GSF followers.(They rattle after a week  ). Do VW heritage do genuine ones ?

I use it every Weds/Thurs for work. 10 mile round trip.

You dont think it will burn out the seat do you.....I might try some Forte top end treatment..I used that on my FTO....Sorted that out a treat.. :D

It cant "burn the seat" if it isnt openeing as far as normal... I'd still go for a good 30 min run to see if it clears it..... 10 miles is barely enough to get it up to temp....

Cheers for that mate. To be fair with the van it runs really well. it does not seam down on power or anything...so I would say that when the follower is full of oil the valve is opening fully.

I will give it a good run and see what happens. Obviously if nothing changes then I will replace both Followers on that cylinder. Where do you suggest the best place is to go..Vw Heritage..Brickwerks ?

Glenn. :D
