Oil level check on a 1.9td conversion

I have owned my T25 for 2 days now and it is back with the garage where I bought it from. It has a 1.9td engine as an upgrade from the 1.6td. The 1.9 is canted over about 45 degrees which means that the dipstick for checking the oil level always appears dry. I asked the garage about this and they suggested adding a litre and returning it to them to sort out an unrelated window problem. The garage added a further litre of oil so that the level just touched the dipstick. The sump is apparently the original 1.6td sump. The garage said they would look into whether a modified dipstick was required to get an accurate level reading. On the way home the throttle reved a couple of times as if I had blipped it while gear changing. There was also a little bit of blue smoke from the rear.

Next the engine went to full revs uncontrolled by me or the accelerator cable. I pulled over, switching off the ingition but the engine continued to run at full revs with massive amounts of thick blue smoke. It did this for about 1.5 minutes during which I abandoned the van, thinking it was about to catch fire. When it stopped, there was a que of cars all stopped due to having zero visibility.

The garage owner came out as I had only got about 2 miles from him and said that the sump was over full and the engine had used its sump oil as fuel (hence the smoke).

The questions are:
Has this happened to any one else?
What damage is it likely to have done?
How is the oil level checked when a canted transplant engine is used?

Any help appreciated.

Disregard the oil stick mark untill you do this.Drain the oil from the sump and fill the engine with 4ltrs of oil.The oil filter will have 1/2 litre in the cannister.Max for this engine fitted on the slant should be 4.5 litres.Once you no the engine has 4.5 ltres check where it us against the dip stick. If you carnt see any oil mark on the dip stick with 4.5ltrs of oil in the engine it needs to be modified

Thanks for the information, much appreciated. I will give that a go assuming the engine is still alive!

Have they fitted the original 1.6td dipstick etc, makes it a lot easier for checking oil through the rear flap..
