Can I upgrade my expansion tank?

I've just replaced the head gasket (biggest job I've done yet :) ), and I reckon the state of the 'radiator' cap (e.g. on the expansion tank) was a probable cause. Under pressure it lets water/steam out. It is the old metal type.

I've bought a new tank with the new type of cap (with a spout) but can't see how it will easily fit where the old one is.

Can anyone give any advice?

1983 1.6d by the way.

Cheers

Anyone? If no-one knows, does anyone have a good condition cap they could sell me?

I think you need a different mounting bracket might be able to get one from VW part no 025 121 409D though expect if its available would be expensive better off trying breakers, the old style metal cap is vw part no 025 121 321

my expansion tank recently spilt on me so I had to upgrade.
I made my own adaptor bracket from sheet aluminium and had to cut the pipes to get them to line up with the spigots. Then made an extension for the bypass tube out of a piece of 15mm copper pipe with 2 elbows (non yorkshire) soldered on.
I've got a 83/84 w/c 1.9 petrol - apparently this is the only year that used the diesel type expansion tank and they are rare, found a site in the states that wanted over $100 hence the conversion.
