right everything has been done, all the relays (2, one for the left and one for the right) are held in place above the fuse board with proper vw relay holders, i took my trigers for the relays from output from the back of the fuse board (going from the fuse bard to the lights) i cut this wire and extended it in to the relay triger. the the output of the relay i re joined to the wire that i took the trigger from.

but i dont have any side lights at the front any more, the first click of the light swich (sidelights only) and the relays click in and i am running diped beam, and i missing something.

any help apreciated neil

Did the original headlights come on in the side light position? If so, youhave got dim dip system.

no fist click of the switch was just the side lights front and rear, second click of the switch was the diped beam,

I think you have connected to the wrong wires you should have connected to a yellow and a yellow/black wire. if you connected to a grey/black and grey/red thats your problem.

i see what your saying but the wires for the triger are a yellow for one side, and a yellow wire with a black stripe on it for the outher.
the funny thing is that the 2 trigger wires, if i turn on the side lights on (1 click of the light switch) and connect a light tester to eather yellow or the yellow and black stripe wire, the light in the tester half lights up as if 6 volts. making me think that the van has been wired so that the main bulb (the dip/high beam bulb) lights up with the side lights at 6v creating a secondary side light.

the grey wire that you make note of is ofr the side lights as it goes to the small 5w bulb below the main bulb.

has any one got any more ideas?

thanks neil

Are you losing the rear side light as well? If not then I think you have got dim dip headlamps. Look above the fuse box for a two pin connector with three yellow wires and one white wire, unplug it that should isolate the dim dip system. Bye the way have you tried the sidelight with the ignition off?

will try to look for the conector now, the rears are working as normal, with the ignition off the and the side lights works as they shoould do, i have wired the realys to come on with the ignition (they power up when the ignition is on) and the relays open.
