2l Aircooled no tickover at all (sudden occurrence)

Last week my van suddenly stopped ticking over (just like a previous thread by someone else) as soon as my foot is lifted from the accelerator it stalls.

this has happened before due to a dodgy air intake valve on the carb (ie missing) changed the carb (standard twin solex's) for a good refurbed spare and still no joy.

have so far done the following;

1/ changed the carb
2/ changed the vac hoses (to be fair, they were falling apart)
3/ changed fuel hoses to carbs
4/ checked power to the carb bypass cutoff valve, fuel cutoff valve and idle enrichment and all is fine
5/ changed ht leads and sparkplugs as they needed doing anyway

any other ideas???? getting a bit stumped now :?

edited to add: on the other similar thread by djhammy the problem was the throttle spindle leaking in air.....what is the throttle spindle and where abouts is it located?

I would be changing the fuel filter, stripping the carbs down and cleaning out...then resetting up on a gas analyzer...

Have you got a manual, haynes or otherwise, and take the carbs back to basic settings if vac pipes were worn probs set to account for that?

He's already done that James, tbh, when on the move its running sweet - just as soon as you let the revs drop it stalls (if you're quick enough, can be jump started immediately  )

eta: in response to your facebook post james, he's changed just one carb (the one that was dodgy) but it was playing up before it was changed, the other seems fine and in good condition

he's got it to hold a tickover by adjusting the throttle adjuster screw a little on the right hand carb - but is now unsure if this was the right thing to do????

no this wasn't the right thing to do - upon test driving it has no throttle response and the revs are all over the place.......returned to original position and start head scratching again :|

Strip em...take CO screws out (counting the turns) and blow out. Put screws back in with same number of turns. I would bet its picked some crap up, mine used to do it till it went on gas :D

By Jove I think you've cracked it!!!!

both CO Screws were right in, tight as (maybe as James suggested a previous bodge to allow for perished vac hoses?) - he's adjusted them 3 turns out and its ticking over a little fast so they're going back 1/2 a turn but its running fine and ticking over fine. Also pulling better!

Fingers Crossed that this was the only problem, Thanks :ok

You need to get to a garage asap and ask them just to set the mixture now, just to get it spot on. As a very very rough guide, mine are about right at 4.5 turns out from screwed right in :ok

Get a length of hose (like for hose pipe) and with the filters off the top of the carbs put hose just inside the top whilst engine is running and listen to how it sounds on both sides, you should have the same sound on both if not the carbs are out of balance, its not an exact way of doing it but will stop it using more fuel on one side than the other etc!

ok, what would happen if I couldn't get this done asap? the nearest Aircooled 'specialist' garage is about 12 miles away and I wouldn't let them touch my van with a bargepole.....Nige tried 4.5 turns and the engine got very 'boggy' sounding and stalled, back to 3 and it ticks over nicely. would I be ok to run the van like this until I can get someone to look at the mix for me? am I right to presume that if the mixture isn't right it'll either run rich which will result in costing more and flooding the engine or running poor which will make it stop?

Ya you are correct, but if its running to weak for to long you could end up doing damage, i.e burning a valve out or even worse dropping a valve. 3 turns should be OK. Just find an MOT garage and ask them nicely if they can stick the pipe up the exhaust...you need anything above 1.5% CO and below 3.5%. If you were really cheeky adjust it when there, same turns on each carbs...
