I might be being stupid but i cant work out how to remove the crank woodruff key on my 2.1 waterboxer, can anyone tell me please? The haynes has decided to miss that out.

I don't know about VW engines - in most applications tapping it down at one end breaks it free and makes it rotate, so you can then flick it out with a srew driver.
