Lambda Probe on a 2.1 - Do I need it?

Hello everyone
My t25 has a 2.1 engine with Fuel Injection, i think its called a DJ engine.
Anyway i have noticed that the Lambda Sensor is disconnected, when reconnected the van kangaroos all over the place and cuts out at junctions etc.
It seems to run super smooth without it.
So basically my question is, do I need to get a new Lambda or is the engine ok without it?
What benefits will i get if i fit a new one?
Thanks in advance
James

You need to identify what ECU you have, as the DJ doesnt normally have a lambda probe (is it a recent german import??)
The MV engine code 2.1's do have a lambda probe and I am sure thet they will run quite poorly if there is a fault/or disconected..
If it is a german import then its poss its been retro fitted with a lambda kit and even cat, this is to take advantage of road tax laws in germany where you pay considerably less road tax when the vehicle is fitted with emission controls...

No real help with your prob, but Are you sure its a DJ, as mine has no lamda sensor, a DJ engine (it'll say on the engine no) is digijet injection, the ones with digifant injection system (MV, SR, SS) have a sensor.

The advice I've been given - "If it didn't need the lambda, the engineers at VW wouldn't have put it in."
And as folks say - Isn't it usually the MV digifant 2.1 that has them.

find out exactly which engine it is, and then exactly what injection system it has, an MV needs the lanbda probe so that the ecu can contrlo the fueling and for everthing on the injection system to work corectly. if it is an MV and a difnant injection system (corect engine and injection system )and the lambde probe is not conected it will still run ok and drive, but it will be running rich and will be using a lot of fuel. the ecu will also be in a limp mode and not produsing the full power.

Thanks for you help everyone,
Your right the van is a B-reg 1984 German Import, and it is infact an MV (i found "MOTORTYP MV" written on an old German MOT thing)
Not sure on the injection system, but from what you say i bet its a digifant as it still runs well, are there obvious differences between them when i look in the engine?
I think its definitely running rich though, will that be damaging my motor - or would you recommend getting it sorted asap?
