The coolant level switch on the expansion tank of my 1984 1.9 petrol has nothing connected to it. There is no sign of any wires that could connect to it. What should be connected to it? Where should the other end connect to? What are the consequnces of it not being connected up?

you mean the header tank?

there should be two wires to it.
The concequences are, the red flashing light will not magicaly appear, to inform you that your engine has no coolant in the header tank.

do you see a red flashing light for a few seconds when you start the van?

The two wires to the header tank switch are blue/green and the other is brown (on mine, '85 1.9DG). They go to a shaped plug. Its tucked back under the bodywork at the rear of engine compartment, bit hard to see. Not the tank through the numberplate hatch
But, as kevtherev says- if you get the flashing light for few seconds, things should be OK.
