timing too advanced

daft question but which way do i turn the dizzy to retard is it clockwise or anti-clockwise

you would be turning it against the direction of rotation of the dizzy arm inside. i would assume the arm goes clockwise and you would bring the cap anti-clockwise.
but you could check with someone giving it a crank with the cap off, or if you dont have someone handy give her a nudge from behind in gear to to see the direction of the arm.

as your running with an Aircooled engine it is paramount that your timing is correctly set as set wrongly it can overheat your engine lowering its life span or the otherway will cause bad running and increased mpg.
It really would be cost effective to get the timing set by strobe or by a mechanic as this will pay dividends in the long run.
your rotor arm rotates clockwise as does your crank pulley viewed from the rear. thus to retard you turn the distributor clockwise

If the rotor runs clockwise, when you turn the distributor anti-clockwise you will advance the timing. ie it will fire earlier.
The laws of physics can't have changed that much since I last dealt with a rotating object.

maybe oldie but i guess you hav'nt addled your skull filler with as much much cider as I well spotted i have edited doh!!!
