Finally managed to get some time off work for the ill fated surfing trip I planned since last year... this means i'm going to need some gas for the cooker though! So just a quick question, what sort of Gas, what sort of regulater and how much should I pay? I've seen bottles from £5 (second hand/ empty) to £35 (full) of butane. Justkampers have regs for £5, but 2 different types, and not sure how much Gas I should carry for 4 days camping? Any help greatly appreciated!

I have a 4.5KG Calor gas blue bottle £13 (exchange)

A 907 camping gaz (blue bottle( Butane) will last three weekends if just used for cooking and a fridge

they are £18-£20 exchange from most campsites, caravan acc shops and camping shops. (£40 if no bottle)

you will need a blue regulator (screw in type) they are about a fiver

the bigger the bottle the less you pay, Propane (red bottle) is best in winter

I got it already in the camper van when I bought it and only used it about 5 times so far so have no idea how much is in it?

Can anyone recommend cheapest places to start looking for refill? Oswald Baileys told me £22.99 for exchange?!?!

We mainly use camper in the UK so might it be more economical changing it over to Calorgas given its wider availability?

£20-£25 is about the going rate for a 907 re-fill.

The cylinder should weigh about 6.7Kg when full. There should be a tare weight stamped on it which will be the empty weight I think.

So Campingaz £22.99 for 2.75kg ( £8.36 Per KG) is a lot more expensive than Calor gas £15.99 for 4.5kg (£3.33 Per KG)

I may as well buy a second hand regulator and Calorgas bottle and go that route and just swap over if need to go to Europe.

I had a full 4.5kg bottle c/w regulator I got for a fiver off e-bay but it wouldn't stand up in the gas cupboard. I used it on its side (not a good idea as the regulator could freeze up) until it ran out. Someone mentioned you can unscrew the base to make them lower but I've never checked myself.

Less than £18 for a 907 refill at my local Direct gas depot (coventry)

I feel 'blessed' to have an underslung LPG tank.....never paid more than £11 from empty (filled at the local garage LPG pump) and lasts getting on for a month of camping used every day for cooking.
In the summer I use a Cadac Easi Chef Deluxe connected to a BBQ take off point on the tank and at other times the two ring burner on the cooker.....Teas or coffee 4/5 times a day, all meals and a kettle of water after each meal for washing up (unless the campsite has sinks for pot washing).
I'm suprised more people don't just fit underslung tanks given the price of bottled gas.

I intend to but LPG for the engine will take priority.

I just wish they'd allow the same tank for engine and leisure ('dual take off' is it?)

I use one and unscrew the metal ring around the top to get it in the cupboard.
3 nuts & bolts = 3 minutes to remove (or re-fit when renewing bottle).
MUCH better value than a 907 (like I used to use before swapping).
You need a different regulator but they are not expensive and worth the investment.

I looked into it - I worked out that I'd need to be living in the van for a something like a year to break even, vs. using Calor. Shame - would have been nice to free up some cupboard space, and simplify Euro trips.

I've just taken this plunge.
Got a tank with an expired TüV for 25€, blasted for 25€ and it's in the painters at the moment.
I reckon it'll cost me about 100€ fully installed (I'll have remove it every 2 years (TüV).
