what is the proper way to set hydraulic lifters please

Set each cyl to tdc in turn (both valves are fully closed) and adjust screw so that is is 1/2 - 1 (half to 0ne) turn in from when it just touches the valve

You should be using a 15w40 or 20w50 oil too.. anything thinner will cause leakdown of the lifters and rattles..

15w40 or 20w40.....says who? With a well functioning and standard engine, 10w40 is fine, and also recommended for colder climates/winter use. Just check your handbook, all the oil/temperature ranges are in there....

VW said that... Actually they recommend 15/50.

Who recommended 10/40?

castrol now recomend 10w 40 (cos they are getting rid of the 15w40)
tried it once got better mpg but the van did not run as smooth or as quiet it runs better on 15w 40.
castrol seem to make it up as they go along always recomending the most expensive.
i hav a 96 bmw 318 and castrol now recomend fully synt oil yet in old cataloge recomend 10w 40

done all that how long will it take for them to quieten down

VW specified a 15w40 when NEW.. do you really think its improved with age??

Seen too many engine filled with thinner oils that rattle and smoke to recomend anything less... But hey.. I've only done 300k miles + in my T25's over the last 11 years...

Thought your's wouldn't start ?

Mineral 15/40 all the way .... 20/50 will hide the first signs of low oil pressure though.
