Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how you remove the plastic heater cover plate from underneath the centre of the dash? I can't see any screws from the front, and it looks impossible to get to any from the back, not that I can see any there either.

I have a 1990 lhd Westy California if this helps.

It just pulls carefully and straight out, IIRC there's a couple of springy clips that keep it in place.

Blimey, that was quick! Thanks for the reply. Are these springy bits difficult to fix back when putting it back in place? I must admit, it seems to be quite solidly fixed, do I just keep pulling & hope for the best?

Nah the plastic cover slides along a channel each side and under these clips which are fixed to the van. (again IIRC)

Nope, as much as I've tried pulling & teasing ( ) I can't get the thing to shift! Ive taken off the glove box to try to get a closer look from behind, but that doesn't seem to throw up any clues. I'm assuming that the thing must come off but it's beyond me how.

Nothing been drilled into it ... switches, gauges ? Does it have the front>back tunnel ? If so this may need to come off, I doubt it though.

The standard factory model just pulls out ... I've just been and done our's to check

Mine was loose when I got it, previous owner all ready snapped the catches off so mine has a little dob of super glue holding it on quick sharp pull and its off!

Thanks for taking the time to try it on your van. There doesn't seem to be anything obviously drilled into it, it is bog standard as far as I can tell. By front to back tunnel I'm not sure. The vent doesn't come out at the rear of the walkthrough to heat the back, as I've seen before. It comes out from the fascia of the rock n roll seat and blows air forwards to the front of the van.....is this what you mean? If it is then I'm buggered if I know how to take it apart!! All I want to do is fit a full one piece rubber cab mat that covers the footwells, gear stick central area & the walkthrough, but the front section of the mat in front of the gearstick rides up quite high so would need to go under the front vent panel & be cut around the pipes coming through the floor behind it. I suppose I could just cut the mat to fit just under the vent panel.......it did only cost me €1.80 from German Ebay .....oh, and the €20 p&p

There are 2 slots under the ridge about halfway down from memory - stick your hands in there and pull back and it should come off. If it's not come off for ages then it'll take a good hard tug, but it will come off. Mine is Aircooled by the way so obviously the heater is different to a watercooled, but it should be more or less the same.

I've done this recently on my caravelle - is yours a diesel? I have a 1.6TD (JX) and it has a 'cold start' handle (like a choke but not) next to the big centre panel. I had to remove this to get the panel off - held in with three screws. Can just let in dangle when unscrewed. If not I guess it is just a big tug and a shower of dust

Thanks for the replies. I will take a look this morning to see if I can find these clips on the side. Tom...it is a diesel 1.6td jx as yours is, so hopefully it should work in the same way.

Will keep you informed, and be back with more desperation if it doesn't work!

some times , for no reason , the metal dashboard seems to come lower than the plastic trim!

usually this is not the case , but you will need to prize the trim past the metal dsah.

the plastic lugs that kep it in place will usually snap off due to being aged , this will not be a problem for refit.

is previously said thoyou will need to remove the choke surround ( couple of screws underneath and the cable to allow clearence.)
