The simple reason or answer to your question is if VW thought the Webber was a better bet than the Pierburg they would have used it in the first place....
There is a guy on the Bay of 'E' s does a re furbed exchange unit for less than the price of a Webber.......

Hi, I've read a lot of posts about this subject. The general opinion is the dg is designed to run on a pierburg so that is best!
But on my last van I managed to get a webber for free, so I gave it a try, the performance was definatly better but god it used the fuel! of course I didn't have a new or recon pierburg to compare it with.
My advise, if you can get a webber cheap or free give it a try otherwise don't waste your money they are very expensive. if you want better performance and don't mind spending a bit stick a Subaru in it!! Thats what I done

the webber isnt very good by all accounts, no end of people have been on here complaininghtat they couldnt get very good MPG and the performance didnt seem as good.. save your cash..
I have rebuilt a few Pierburgs maybe I should offer the service..

Evening,
I've got a weber, and now the auto choke is sorted it seems to run well. Get about 23mpg on a run, and a bit less round town. This seems to be roughly in line with the pierberg 1.9dg's I think.
However, it was on the van when I got it. I think that a pierberg would be the way to go, as you'll get the right jets etc. Google search, there's a bloke out in/near Clacton that does them.
Cheers,
Alex

I've never had much joy with them, can never get them to set up right.
Theres nothing wrong with a good pierburg.
