What the blithering heck are these hoses on an EJ22?

As it says. I can't see where these are supposed to connect up to and they're not mentioned in any of the cooling diagrams anywhere, which suggests they might be breathers, but I don't know and it's a long time since I took the engine out!

I await Disco's answer with interest.....

Them'll be the crankcase breathers that connect to a T underneath the air intake that is just before the 90degree bend that connects to the throtle body.

here ya gohttp://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8 ... _-_Engine/
Ther is 104 pages in that document look at (adobe) page 96 you will see the hoses link to another fig (fig 79) on page 76 you may also find page 54 useful

Cheers, ta, thank you very much :D

I feel a mating exercise coming on this weekend  , provided I can get up to Cheltenham to get the replacement clutch cover.

The SmallCar bits are starting to prove their worth - bolting up nicely.

just put a button filter on each one it keeps the hoses down to a minimum :D

Given that I may well dump it in water to that depth I think I'll route them into the intake anyhow!

Cheers anyway.

is this the same test when checking for leaks with an inner tube Thomas
seems a waste of a good engine

Did you get to mate it all up then?? Don't keep us in suspense, how did it go?? :) Any pic's ??

On a serious note what parts are you using in your conversion Mr Hell

I wasn't happy with the clutch cover and the replacement couldn't get to me until Monday so I lost interest and wandered off to VanWest on Sunday, so no I didn't get it mated up.

Maybe tonight though as the clutch turned up yesterday and is all fitted up now.

I'm using an RJES bellhousing surrounded with SmallCar bits that i got over from the USA. The bellhousing and the SmallCar parts all seem to be excellent quality and are going together well so far.

We don't talk about the loom - that's still to come in the next couple of weeks....

Are you doing the loom yourself?

We'll see.

I've started.... so I hope I can finish (with a little help).

It's SO close to being mated up that I can smell the turkeys!

REALLY should be done tonight - no point rushing things, eh?

Just a quick one, when the engine was still in the subaru, did the starter bolt to the engine or did the starter bolt to the bellhousing.

On some models of subaru, the starter bolted to the bellhousing and some went through the bellhousing and bolted to the engine.

if you have the one that bolted to the bellhousing does your new bellhousing have the thread?
Mine needed a threaded bellhousing, Richard supplied an insert or you can thread the hole in the bellhousing and threadlock the bolt that goes in.

One other thing to check when you put it together, have you put a new clutch kit on the engine?, once you bolt it togther turn the engine by hand (a socket on the main pulley bolt will do it) and make sure everything is ok, my clutch kit was a bit bigger than the original and I have to increase some clearances on the bellhousing.

Let me know if I can help with the loom - One thing I will say - mount the ECU and igniter and other elastictrickery in the van itself under the back seat, its alot easier to do - and do it now while the van is in its current state
Another tip - strip everything off the loom, put the engine in the van , get a rough idea of the lengths you need, sort out the wiring and tape it up.

Try here http://www.nfauto.co.uk/ or here http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/ for your fuse holders, cable covering, and other electrical bits.

That's not a quick one, is it?

Cheers for the hints and tips, mind.

I'll hit your points one at a time

did the starter bolt to the engine or did the starter bolt to the bellhousing.

It bolted to the engine on one bolt and the bellhousing on another - Richard supplied the threaded insult to suit.

Ah, now, you're just too late on that one - got there last night - only when the unit was together and in the van :( Back out tonight and split again for a little 'clearancing' of the bellhousing.

Let me know if I can help with the loom - One thing I will say - mount the ECU and igniter and other elastictrickery in the van itself under the back seat, its alot easier to do - and do it now while the van is in its current state.

Cheers for the offer, I have a Syncro, which means there's a thumping gurt 75l fuel tank over the gearbox. The location of the various elastriceral bits will be decided at the weekend.

Another tip - strip everything off the loom, put the engine in the van , get a rough idea of the lengths you need, sort out the wiring and tape it up.

There alreaady - it was carefully stripped back a few months ago.

There is the idea of a reversed loom I've seen on one of the conversion sites, but I'm not sure this would work for what I'm thinking about doing anyway.

Maybe the Subaru powered buses should hook up at a show at some point.... we could callit the T25+ Club or something..... [/quote]

RJES Bellhousing update....

Nice work posting all the pictures of your installation coming together on the forum. Looks like it's coming on nicely.

This'll probably bore everyone with the details, but Diamond Hell's bellhousing is from the first production batch I made, and is intended for the Phase II Subaru engines which have the lower starter bolt going through into the engine block. The steel insert was added as a work around to allow that first batch to be installed on Phase I engines (where the lower starter bolt screws into the bellhousing), as I wasn't aware of this until a customer told me. All bellhousings made since that first batch have the lower starter bolt hole tapped to suit Phase I engines. To use them on a Phase II, you simply drill the hole out with an 11mm drill. The hole is partly drilled to 11mm as standard, to help centre your drill

Regarding having to clearance the bellhousing, two customer's so far have found clutches which did not fit the bellhousing design. Both are believed to be aftermarket. All bellhousings from the third batch onwards have this potential problem solved - they even have enough clearance to allow the massive 240mm 2002 --> STi clutch to fit. If anyone is buying a clutch for an RJES bellhousing kit they already have, get in touch, and I'll help you choose one which will fit with no clearancing (if required).

Both of these minor problems have annoyed me rather a lot, as I bought about six clutches to check the fit of the bellhousings with, and they were all OK. Despite about 35 changes to the original bellhousing design, there were still some combinations of parts which didn't fit. Typical! That's the way development goes though!
