I had to change the speedo in the 2.6 SA since it was reading a good 10% slow - not good. The one fitted said 805 on the face (but strange numerals, maybe Golf 1?), but when I removed it to put in a good mph one I find that the face has been swapped and it's really the original km/h one (dated 1994) I can only guess that in pulling off the needle to change the face, the calibration of the balancing spring has been spoiled.
What I thought was 188000 miles is really km. around 115000 give or take

Now the tricky bit. It's been in the UK for about 5 years, and all the MOT's have interpreted the odometer as miles 'cos that's what it said/was recorded by the importer/garage.
I've put in a speedo that reads similar mileage (in miles) but it's obviously wrong. Fraudulent even?
How can I get this sorted so that I can fit a speedo or alter the odo so that I can legally display the true miles/kilometres covered by this vehicle?

I don't think it is illegal for the display to read the wrong mileage. As long as when you sell the vehicle you mention the fact it's a different speedo and the mileage is wrong. I might be wrong though.

I'm not too worried as the bus isn't up for sale (not if I can help it, anyway) I was really wondering if I can get the VOSA record set straight. But that would be a can of worms, right?
I think I'll just have to make a note of what's been done and when for the record and put my anorak away

It only becomes illegal if you try to pass a lower mileage off as your own....put it this way, VOSA recognise the legitimate need to fit second hand speedometers to keep vehicles running, just note down old mileage and the date at which it was changed together with the displayed mileage on the replacement...keep it as a document so it can be shown in the future to any prospective owners.
