I picked up an aaz engine a week back, seller told me it had done just over 100K and it was in good condition with no problems. I have removed the intake pipe from the turbo to the intake manifold and there is an oily film on the inside of the pipe, looking more closely it is also all inside the compressor housing, is the turbo shafted? Im beginning to think that I also may have been

Both my turbos (2.5TDis) leave a little oil in the air pipe. It's a question of degree. Too much is when you get blue smoke. You can always get a turbo specialist (not DIY) to renew the seals if it proves to be blue smoky.

It was a light film of oil, there is slight side to side play in the shaft but no axial play. The exhaust port is a little sooty but nothing too severe. Is it best to stick it on and see what its like when its running? I cannot afford to get it rebuilt if I do not have to.

I'm no expert on turbos, but I understand that a little side to side play is essential as the spindle rides on a film of oil in the plain bearings. Seems to me you have nothing to lose by trying it out.

yes until you have had it running dont worry about it.
all turbo diesels will have oil in the inlet , sometimes its a small pool on some bends or in the intercooler, they still all seem to run ok.

fit it and see how it runs.

Don't forget the crankcase vents to the air inlet upstream of the turbo, so a film of oil is to be expected.
