campervan TV reception (Scotland)

I'm in the Highlands at the moment. I've been lent a new Techwood 16' LCD TV/DVD with freeview (it can run on 12V). I got a Image 530 TV Airel. Just can't get any signal off the TV.
I didn't test the combo before I left, as didn't have much time too. Only tested the 530 airel plugged into myhome TV and it picked up reception indoors ok ,though a bit grainy!
Is it difficult to get reception in Scotland. Is it a must you gota have the airel pointing towards the transmitter?

I would imagine reception in the highlands might be a bit iffy what with all the hills and mountains etc. I generally tune my TV in by hunting out the analogue first, turning the aerial for the best reception (ie pointing at the nearest mast) and then try the digital tuning. Not tried it in scotland though and obviously this method won't work if you're in an area where the analogue signal has been turned off. Yet another technological 'improvement' that's only half as good as it's predecessor

You can pick up a low quality analogue picture without being too accurate but digital requires you to be pretty spot on - which is why I use analogue first if I can.

With digital freeview you must re-scan the tuner otherwise your tv is trying to pick up signals from the transmitter where you last scanned and set up the TV. Every time you move around the UK you will need to re-scan the TV tuner to the local transmitter.............if there are houses around you can usually spot the direction to point the aerial by looking at their roofs, if most have sat dishes then usually this means it's a crap area for digital freeview reception. Your TV set up menu should have a signal strength reading to help you point the aerial for optimum signal strength when doing the channel scan.

Hi Nesty you should be able to pick up a tv signal on analog you will just have to retune your tv every time you move camp.
