Basic Oil Change Question

Hi everyone,
I am going to have a go at doing my first oil change (ever!) and wanted to check to see if the guide on the wiki for petrol engines is more or less the same as doing it for a diesel (1.6td jx)? I also have read/heard that I need to replace the sump washer and the seal for the oil filter, is this right and is there anything else I need (apart from oil... got oil filter, oil filter wrench, oil trap)?
Thanks in advance!

Hi!
I did this for the first time last year too. All as you say - the only thing I found was my JX had a conical shaped drain plug and therefore did not have a seal - I bought a seal but it did not fit! Took it back to VW no problems.....My friends were teasing me about the cost of a VW washer anyway
Good luck!
I changed the oil, oil filter, air filter (in the torpedo shaped box on the left) and the fuel filter. Ran like a dream afterwards. Take care with the oil you choose - mine had done a high milage so went for a 15W-40, Castrol for High Milage vehicles. Seems to drink less now too. Be sure the oil is VW compliant (it tells you the number on the flat behind the number plate 500-501 or something...the oil will say if it meets it on the label...which I had to translate from Norwegian

)

my old jx did not have a washer.and the sump plug did not come off you just had to undo it a few turns and this released the oil.dont forget to get the engine warm before draining.

Thanks for the replies! Just what I needed. Gonna go with Quantum 15W40 oil, gonna pick some up for a vw garage this weekend.
I've already done the fuel filter and air filter so just the oil one to go.

Morning!
This is what I have in mine
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165581" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and happy with it. They do one for Turbo Diesel Engines which I guess is better if you can find it. I intend to change the oil twice a year anyway (approx every 5000km) so I do not think it will make all that much difference.....although I am no expert!
Happy hunting.
Tom.
