I think me gearbox just went pop--no warning--running ok then stuck in 3rd-came to a stop--got it out of gear-all I get now is reverse, 1st & 2nd--I'm guessing this aint the linkage--looks like Shiplakes are the gearbox suppliers of choice--I'll get me local garage to fit it--there good ole' boys--so couple'o questions--lookin at Haynes--is the gearbox removed leaving the bellhousing & clutch in place?--clutch has done 40k miles is it worth replacin yet? van is never thrashed--how many hours labour approx should a workshop charge fopr gearbox change--'88 wbx 4spd ----cheers--

Clutch plate etc is on the flywheel, which stays on the engine. Gearbox and bellhousing come off as one, with the clutch actuating mech (cable or hydraulic) Clutch should still be good - but some always replace while it's apart...
I can change a gearbox in about an hour and I'm no professional! so barring problems (eg nasty bolts on the driveshafts) a garage should do so too.
