Hi all,

Just been goosed on buying a t25 camper 1980 1584cc air cooled CT enginge code.

Drove fine on a test drive, paid the man and typically 5 mins later a serious judder on pulling away, not all the time but some times when giving it somes gas, feels like the engine is going to fall out.
Checked the engine mounts, gearbox fixings etc. All look ok.

After reading about the possible causes on here, decided that it might be a dodgy clutch, had local garage change this and the judder is still there!
They are thinking the fly wheel may be stuffed now?

Now if it is the fly wheel (any advice appreciated) where can i find one? tried a good few places with no joy.

So there it is, been robbed by the seller, one new clutch, still one serious occasional judder and can't find the fly wheel to fit a 1980 1600cc anywhere................

Don't know if this is aplicable to type 25 but on an air cooled van with a cable clutch there had to be a piece of flexable tube at the gear box end. This has to have a large bend in it. I had the same problem on an old van and putting this in fixed it.

Yep CT has a cable operated clutch, first check the flexible conduit next to the transmission has the correct curve, infact it would be better to replace it first.

WHile you are under there checking the cable... Check the rubber mount on the front of the gearbox.. not always clear that it has failed.. get someone to slip the clutch/pull away (causing the judder) while you look under the bus at the front of the box.. if it jumps up and down, then the mount is fubarred..

Presume you look from the side otherwise it'll be "Oh I think I see what it is......" crunch.

YES.. Look from the side a few feet away so that you can see it for longer...
I'd like to think that most people are not daft enough to lay under a van thats being driven.. but you never know... I was forgeting thats what the Darwin awards were for...


No it needs to be on the ground so the wheels and drive train are "loaded".. it will never do it when up in the air..

helper driver, sliding door, big car park.

You can do it over a pit with foot on brake, handbrake on, and driver that knows what he/she is doing, usually can get it juddering on a slipping clutch ..

Lever engine mountings about, inspection alone is no good...

Clutch release bearing or pawl can also cause..

Workshop should have checked flywheel was true and not badly blued/warped perhaps when box was out... (one would have thought )

Ah, the graised nose one.

Agree, judder could well be caused by foobarred mountings. Had it happen on beetles with knackered engine mountings, or a bolt missing somewhere.

This story sounds horribly familiar, I have, just today bought a 1989 T25 1.9 watercooled which drove fine on the short test drive and now I have driven it home it judders and bangs when I pull away. It seens to be worse when I pull away gently and sometimes does not happen (but not every time) if I am a bit more robust and pull away faster, though that may just be my imagination and the fault is just intermittant.
I have just got home from buying it and now have a bad feeling of doom which is spoiling what should have been an exciting day.
If anyone has any ideas, or if you find out what is causing it on your I would love to know.
I am hoping it is something reasonably simpler like the engine mounts but I have a horrible feeling.
Did you buy yours from a bloke in Reading?

9 out of 10 times this is caused by engine mounts and or the gearbox mount at the front end of the gearbox. Usually the gearbox mount gives a bit of grief first!

indeed and oil contamination from a leaky gearbox seal or crankshaft seal

this was my trouble too
I changed the thrust bearing and pressure plate ass, all the mounts, and the gearbox seal (shagged) while it was out

No not intermittent, it's pulling away faster (e.g. more commitment!) that gets truck through any incipient juddering phase before it can build up .. that's the trick
