Oil cooler is off - with engine in

Fantastic it an be done!!!
Couple of questions
The Haynes manual says fit a new gaskit and oil cooler seals. Well there wasnt an old gasket unless it had completly broken down.
Do I need a gasket?
Also if I pressure test the cooler I can hear a hissing at one end. When I mean pressure test it, I mean putting one finger over one hole and blowing in the other, not scientific I know but there seems to be a leak.
Should I hear anything? or is there another hole somwhere that i should block
Cheers
If its leaking this could be the root of all my low oil pressure problems and overheating

Actually
I hear missing for a few seconds and then it presurises.

May be I am forcing oil in to the small holes by blowing it. I think it needs a good clean first
Cheers

Bloody hell mate - well done getting the cooler off with engine in. Saw your post on this last week so proves can be done...
I might well have to do this as well this weekend. How long did it take you and how many knuckles did you crack trying to get in out. Any other tips?

About 5 hours but the only issue is the oil filler tube. It gets in way of removing the fan housing.
You have take out the one bolt that you can get to and loosen the other about 5 mm and then the slack in the tube allows you to remove the fan housing.
I have been taking piccys and will write somthing for the wiki
Cheers

Ace - piccys and wiki submission would be great!!
Was it 5 hours just to get it off? I was hoping for 5 hours in total!!...

No 5 hours to get it off
But I had loads of bolt issues and ended up having to take of the left and right furest back tinware peices as I didnt have the right tools. One fan housing bolt took me two hours to shift
Ill piccy it ASAP

Jeez - sounds like you've had a bit of a 'mare!!
As I've just rebuilt mine and undone every nut and bolt a couple of weeks ago - hopefully should come apart pretty easily again...

Nice one - I told you it was possible to take off with the engine still in the van. I don't remember the oil pipe needing to be taken off, but maybe I'm blocking out some bad memories!! There is deffo no gasket though, just the 2 rubber o rings. While it's all off you should be able to check the engine cooling flaps are there and also springing and working. Watch when you put the housing back on, I trapped the cooling flaps but fortunately I checked it worked before I bolted it all back together.

Cheers - just put a cheque in the post!!

I still can't figure out though why Haynes tell you to take out the engine. Weird. I tell you what though, I did the tendons in on my elbow doing it and now I've got tennis elbow. Old age and all that!!! But no pain, no gain.

Got our oil cooler off yesterday - took me hour and a half to get it off which I rwas really pleased with. Did help that just done engine out rebuild a couple of weeks ago so a) all bolts / nuts not seized which makes a huge difference, b) everything had been cleaned when engine out so you see what you are doing and c) knew where everything went, etc
Gotta say, was quite in easy in the end. Only bit that slowed me down was manouevering the actual fan housing and right front tinware to actually get it out, which was a bit fiddly.
It did take me a lot longer to put back together but I was messing about with other things...Started about 10:30 and finished totally at 18:15 so still a full days work but well worth it. The massive leak I had on the cooler was because the muppet who was helping (?) me had left the spacers / washers on the bottom of the studs so when I was trying to tighten up all I was doing was tightening against the spacers and not the crankcase - d'oh!!
I therefore decided to check everything else we had done together while it was all apart and he'd also rigged the heater control flaps up wrong so they were defaulting to the closed position. Also, the left front tinware was on the wrong as overlapping instead of underlapping with the right piece. So, all in all and really successful and satisfying days work....

Thanks for everyones help with this...

Hi,
Just looking to do this. So it is possible to do the oil cooler replacement with the engine in situ? (Aircooled lump)
What's the general sequence for removing it? The owner said he'd tried, but there was tinware that was in the way that couldn't be removed? He was a bit vague about it.
Thanks
