Hello, just joined and already need help

Have a 1986 Transporter with a 1.9TD Passat engine. The gearbox died several months ago and is in bits with my mechanic. Have been unsuccessful in locating a suitable replacement that is sensibly priced; any advice greatly received, thanks

So send the bits to someone to get it rebuilt.
Try Dave at Shiplake Motors - 0118 9403125
for a couple of hundred pounds you get a rebuilt gearbox with new bearings etc that should be good for a long time to come, not some dodgy second hand lump that might break in 6,000 miles, might break in 60,000 miles.

A couple of hundred pounds is very cheap compared to what I have been quoted and my mechanic says that the gearbox is in too many bits for a re-build

Really looking for any suggestions on salvage.....have tried many, many places. Thanks
box here

Tell that mechanic to put ALL the bits in a box and give to you back, asap!
What rubbish... its in too many bits to repair, he put it in too many bits?? If its badly borken then get another one... ?

Was given some advice on here and followed it up by speaking to a guy called Russel from Syncro-Nutz who suggested that I get a 4-speed petrol and do some conversion work. My mechanic didn't seem too impressed with this and has gone away to consult some oracle and will get back to me; hopefully this month. The reason my Canary is with this guy is cos it died at home and I was only able to limp to the local garage. The mechanic assured me it was something simple that he could fix, but when he removed the gearbox 'lots of little bits fell out'. He said that the casing was also cracked and beyond repair. I only bought the camper at the end of last season but am already really hooked on her and am suffering bad withdrawal symptoms...so is my dog.

Maybe try SyncrosparesUK Ltd then, see if he's still got any 2WD boxes to suit
Looks to me like you'e been offered a box for 150 up the thread a bit, now that would be a good bet rather than this ongoing dialog with mechanic? Then you can get yours sorted as time goes by for a spare...
