Is it the 2nd stage fan that comes on? Mines on a switch now too and the second stage fan is quite noisy.

yep 2nd speed is noisy .. then again it's comforting to know it's shifting a lot of air.

Mine only has 2 wires on it so i don;t think its a two stage its just on or off, + there is play in the shaft that isn't there on the replacement fan

Ah right. I wired mine via the relay in the fusebox from a switched 12v supply. First I tested the fan from behind the front grill by shorting the contacts. 1st and 2nd stage.
Is it a loud hum when it comes on or is it more of a clunk??

Ive got a haynes and that says drain system and remove complete rad unit but as with most things there may be a way of changing it by just loosening the rad tilting it etc
