Hi

I am thinking of making a home made sun shade to clip to the side of my van and was wondering if anyone has dont this and has any tips. Sorry but im skint and after looking at JK,s one (Amazing Outdoors), its just a tarp and two poles with guide ropes for 99 quid.

There really is nothing of it

Cheers :mrgreen:

I made the one in my avatar with some ripstop fabric (ebay) awning tape (local caravan shop) some 2" webbing and some poles from an old tunnel tent - it cost about £30 in total and works a treat.

as for tips, dont' use fabric that's too heavy otherwise it'll be droopy :mrgreen:

i have been using this as a temporary solution:

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/tarp-3243880/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

£20 and withstood some serious Welsh rain. i am now experimenting with attaching it to the van with bungees so that one side stays above the gutter and the rest slopes gently away from the van.

Search the web for "lokon vario canopy" we bought one at dubfreeze for £35 ( since found on web for £20).

Fits straight to figure 8 strips on gutter...perfect solution. Up in under 5 mins

What about using an old tunnel tent.....i'm sure you must have 1 or 2 lying about Silky!

I'm thinking of that grey party tent that you've seen.

Cut away the back and seam, cut away the sides and seam......sew in some net curtain wire for the figure of 8 to grip onto on one of the pockets for the poles.

Got the £20 decathlon awning linked above (http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/tarp-3243880/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

Combine with the pole and clamp kit from here: http://campershop.co.uk/awning_accessories_parts.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sew a sleeve into one edge of the awning to slide the pole into, clamp into the gutter and get a couple of extra poles (eg http://www.family-camping-supplies.co.u ... t=23&i=182" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

and the result is this:

Which works very well :)

See: https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=70549" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Tarp is 3m x 3m from a company called Tenth Wonder Hammocks on Ebay. Costs £31 posted. Comes with tie down cords and a couple of soft ground pegs. I combined it with two 1.5m tent poles that I already had and a few tent pegs for pegging down the bottom edge. Ties at top front to luggage lashing ring and at the back to the door hinge.
Takes 60 seconds to put up and is just the right size for the van. Wont stand up to strong winds or heavy rain but otherwise makes a neat little porch as shown or a bigger sunshade when opened right out.

Happy camping,
Oldjets

Yep, I'm getting the discounted one. Well worth 50quid esp as it won't allow rain to hold. However, should just mention it is only shower proof!

However, if you still want to be a Gorilla Warrior and make your own - how about using an IKEA sun canopy http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=canopy" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But you will still need poles, ropes, pegs and clips to attach to van. This was my plan, but at the price I am back to JK.

Shame these sun awnings arn't drive away though!
