Thicker oil in a JX?

I'm getting pretty bored of regularly topping up the oil on my 1.6TD JX. It's not leaking out anywhere, just consuming a fair old bit (due to its rather mighty mileage). Has anyone tried a slightly thicker grade to deal with those worn-out old rings and seals? I know its probably not a long-term fix, but I'm just trying to keep the old dear going for a year or two until I have the spare cash to stick an AAZ or similar in...

You could try a slightly heavier more viscos oil.....20W50 diesel.

Also....does it smoke on overun? ie: high revs....engine slowing the vehicle down for 5-10 seconds and then POOOOOOOF! of smoke when the excellerator is re-applied? if it does then suspect valve stem oil seals as a contributing factor towards the oil consumption. These seal harden and split and oil is then sucked down the valve guides into the engine.

Castrol RX Diesel 20W50
Morris XHD 20W50
Unipart 20W50 Diesel
Valvoline Racing 20W50 Diesel

Not so I've noticed. Doesn't smoke much at all, apart from a little on cold starts.

Wynns make an oil addative that is designed to soften the rubber seals again. It does work as I have used it on a number of vehicles in the past. Takes a few miles to kick in and work but it does seem to do a fair job.
