went to my first vw show the weekend and was taken home on the back of an aa truck.
engine is smoking well and used nearly all the oil in 35 miles and then started to make a different sound seemed to be much louder than normal. was told not the engine has gone. every one i speak to say that it costs just as much to rebuild then to buy a new recon is this true. oh yeah its an 1800 air cooled :

They did make an 1800 Ian, Heritage had some new ones not so long ago as a complete turnkey solution, they were more of an industrial engine, Alan and Denise from Shrewbury had one, quite a nice unit but the heat exchangers are weird.

Knew somebody with a bay with a 1200 in! Kid you not, he fitted a small bug engine. Went surprisingly well but took quite a while to get any speed up
I think he generally relied on the vacuum of passing lorries to get that initial start when pulling away from the kerb.

To answer your original question, Yes, it's usually cheaper and certainly a lot simpler and quicker to get a recon unit. That applies to most vehicles, not just T25s.
Unless, of course you enjoy tinkering with old engines and have lots of time on your hands, and all the right tools etc.
You can also consider changing the engine size / type and even fuel system at this time - many other threads here on these topics.

Lauri Pettitt maybe around 700 quid
