What were the results?? as its been known that the MOT tester has used the wrong limits.. should have given you the test results with limits they tested too..
Although there could be something wrong wit it too
A new air filter and "injector cleaner" may help lower it if there is a small gain to be had as would changing the oil and taking it down the bypass flat out in 3rd before taking it in for the test..

When did it last have a jolly good service and set up?
Small tweak on the airflow meter prob required... as per haynes manual..

My MOT tester is a local garage and the guy I try and get is a fan of old vehicles (he runs a SII LR). He let me use their gas tester to set up the CO properly the weekend before the test and it was as easy as twiddling the 5mm hex head in the AFM. That said, my engine is in good nick etc. I set mine at a little over 2% as I thought slightly richer would be kinder to the engine than slightly lean. (2% + or - 0.5% I think for wbx.)
