have had trouble with the van's engine since we got it. it packed up a mile away from home last year and is still not happy about running.
timing, points, exhaust, carbs all been replaced. now........
have just come into some unexpected funds, about £1000
would this get me a 2 litre engine and 5 speed box?
and where is a place to get it from.
preferably somewhere near south beds
thanks

What's the attraction to the five speed box?
that aside... get a recon engine add electronic ignition.. sell the old one... buy beer with the savings and enjoy yourself

should already have electronic ignition, dont bother with the hassle of a 5 speed..
As said.. is it just a general mechanic working on your van? as these need a more specialist approach.. poor running could be all sorts of things, generally not related to the engine itself.. worn out carbs are always a biggy... poorly set ignition timing and poor quality ignition parts dont help.. along with air leaks etc....
IMHO fitting a new engine with all the old tat thats on the current engine wont help a lot.. it needs a propper diagnosis..

carb replaced.
professional set up for timing, leads plugs replaced.
exhaust replaced, fuel filters replaced. pump replaced. electronic ignition rewired and fully checked, yet still the van does not run as it should
so
we are looking for a 'proper job''- to sort out what is wrong with the thing, and guess that a bigger engine will give the van more oomph and that a new/recon engine will be more reliable.
as its mainly driven by me, and my mechanical knowledge is limited it needs to be better than it has been.
thats why i am looking for any advice i can get!

2L Aircooled? yes??
"carb replaced"?? so its got a single webber (or copy) on it?
When it was "set up" did it go on a rolling road to be setup? the webber carb jetting is very very poor when it comes in a box.. (the webber copies are worse) and require a rolling road session with a carb familier operator.. (northants motorsport have done a few) they rarely run right without a lot of tweaking..
