Engine Removal (not g-box) - with silencer?

Ay up,
The engine is coming out as I want to inspect/measure the pistons and barrels properly as they may need to be 'made good', I've had the engine out before (left the box on the van) but can't remember if the silencer needs to be removed to allow you to the pull the engine rearwards off the box before dropping it down? OR... can you lower the engine a few inches then pull it rearwards off the box then drop it to the ground? Ideally I'd like to leave the silencer and pipework on as it's just a mass of rust now (dismantling = renewal = more cost
)
