New roof section

Spent this afternoon removing the front section of my westy pop top to replace it with the later section without the rack. I scratched my head for ages because I could not get the screws out that fixed it to the roof. In fact I could not work out how Jean Louis got them in. I ended up cutting around the brackets wrecking the roof section in the process.

I now have to weld up 4 small screw holes and repaint the roof as it has a number of small rusty bits. Also had to remove the factory sunroof to treat some surface rust there.

What I thought would be a couple of hours work has turned into a nightmare.

Oh well thats life and syncro ownership isn't it.

Man, i hate "quick little jobs" that turn out like that.

Some interesting points, i have often wondered if the westy roof makes any part to the original roof into potential rust traps, through channelling the water and it getting trapped for example of just by it ducting under the seal and sitting there?

Do you have any photos?

No photos at the moment but will take a couple tomorrow. The rust spots I think are nothing really. I am talking pin head size surface rust where I think the paint is a bit thin. My van has been through the galvanising tank in the Hanover factory so the rust was never going to be major.

There is a bit of rust around the edge where the hole for the sunroof has been cut after the galvy bath.

Well the rust wasn't rust. Turn out the little rust marks were just that marks. Polished out. The rust around the edge of the sunroof hole was spray glue. I ended up fibreglassing the 4 screw holes rather than welding. Seemed safer than welding near the windscreen. Turned out alright. Just need to paint the roof now and fit the painted roof section
