No Dip stick

I have an 83 diesel 1600, the engine has no dipstick, I have been told before on here that the early engines had their dip stick inside the oil filler tube but my oil filler tube has been exchanged for the standard type. its not too bad getting the correct oil in after an oil change but its hard to monitor the oil level between changes. Does anyone have any good ideas, the engine block does have a hole where a dip stick once went but it looks as though it has been blocked since build. a good method to monitor the oil level would be a great help

go up the breakers and get one from a (fiesta i think) they are metal too, you will have to cut it so its the same length as the silly VW plastic breakable ones, grind a couple of marks on, for your fill levels. if you want i will measure mine and let you know. jim
as for the filler cap you will need to either get the proper on or drill a hole in the one you have to match your new dipstick.

Other way to get accurate fill level is mark the dipstick once its been filled with new oil using the measured quantity. Known a few people do that using a stretched-out coat hanger as a replacement dipstick.

Thanks all for the good advice I will try the hanger trick first before I go looking for a proper dip stick but both sound good to me.

My filler is the type with the extendible neck and a good curve as it goes into the sump is the normal oil level high enough to allow a dip stick to be shoved down the filler and see a level?, I hope so will try in the morning.

Make sure you know the oil capicity first as there appears to be discrepancies.
WBX is 4.5 litres with filter although for me (2.1 MV) it tends to be about 4.2 litres properly hot drained until it drips with new filter (Original dip stick)
