Hi,

Currently on Holiday enjoying a very windy (and now wet) Cornwall. The van had an oil change last week and is now dripping (loosing) oil from the sump plug, especially when warm. This is now being referred to as Dub Wee when we return to find a black puddle in the car park....

Iv got 5 litres of oil on me and, currently loosing about 1/2 litre a day so will be okay I hope - my plan is to change the sump plug. The plug is currently covered in the gunk from the garage, iv got my socket set on me so I could remove gunk and try to tighten but dont want to cross thread and im sure the dub garage know more than me. I guess it will need a washer and possibly a plug. I do not know if the plug is the original. Have looked on justkampers but cannot decide what is the correct plug for a 1.9 DG (petrol, watercooled) and id rather not drain the engine to find iv got the wrong plug. I have a million books on fixing the bus, but none actually tell me what plug I need....

Cant cross thread it if its all the way in, tho you could strip the threads, loosing 1/2 ltr is a lot! I would try to tighten it a little bit!

Have you checked the tightness of the plug? If it feels tight most likley the sump and plug threads are ok.

When the oil change was done was the sump plug washer replaced? If not just get a new washer from any motor factor and just replace it, that should solve your problem without finding a new plug.

What respectfull "specialist" would slap a load of gunge (gasket seal) on a fubarred sump thread.. ?? the plug wont be stripped, the thread in the alloy case prob is...

Check it isnt loose, but DO NOT attempt to "tweak it up" a little.. as its prob gonna fall out... easiest way to cure it is to re-tap to M16 and fit suitable sump plug.. (IIRC Brickwerks has them)

If it falls out, the engine will be bugger'd within a few seconds... 1/2L a day is an awful lot..

Ah... right now I am concerned. It sounds like the sealant might be the only thing holding the oil in. There was me planning on driving 100 miles home and play on driveway - wouldn't like the plug to be falling out on me. Guess I'll be taking the van to a garage in the morning for someone to take a look. Need a garage in Bude.

buy an m16 tap and a renault m16 sump plug and save some money

I borrowed a ramp today, drained the oil and discovered the thread in the sump is, 'fubbared'. The plug now has some PTFE tape on it and a new washer (the old one looked like it had been used and reused and reused. There is a dash of loctite on the outside of the sump / plug groove. This has reduced the leak to drips and not large amounts of oil. Il be looking to get it re-tapped upto an M16, and possibly speak with the garage who changed the oil first time round.
