general syncro query

Hi,
I am looking for general info on syncros, different models, engines, technical specification etc. Good points and bad ones, what to look for when buying.
I have some knowlwdge of t25's having a 1980 Aircooled camper.
I would be looking to use as a farm runaround, so probably looking at single or crew cab, as would want to be able to utilse load bed to carry stuff.
Any advice or pointers where to look.
Thanks

Not just 6 months, Russel? Surely that's enough to know everything Syncro-wise, isn't it?
Don't buy one as a farm run around - they're getting too old and spares aren't as easily available as they once were. Also they have steel bodies which are starting to suffer the inevitable tin worm.
That said, there's still no better way of moving 5-6 people and/or more than half a tonne of stuff around than a Syncro doka IMHO.
Just be aware what you're suggesting is running an elderly vehicle as a workhorse.

A lot of which is tosh!
e.g. find me a T25 that you can't beat the synchromesh from 1st to 2nd when cold and I'll say you have a unique vehicle. It's not whether you can clash the gears when cold but whether the synchromesh is really worn or not... but mainly don't think the syncrop is much different than any other 5-speed T25 in this respect.
A lot of the other stuff is wrong too, implies no drive to the front without differential speed between the two - whereas up to 50 Nm is normally transmitted.
etc.etc.
A Doka would make a fine farm run-around - I think DH just thinks they're now too valuable for that

Not too valuable, just..... a little elderly. I spent a few years throwing anything and everything into mine, but then that was a few years ago now.
No vehicle would have served me as well at that time.... well maybe a TDI doka, or a Subaru-powered one....

Here we go
DONT DO IT BUY A LAND ROVER

But how many new, bling bling pickups are actually used in anger rather than posing any more - sand and ballast is delivered in 3/4 metre prope-bags, cement by the pallet load on site, etc.
Today, its almost sacrilege to use a new vehicle for general farm use, building or landscape gardening - buy a new bling pickup, get the windows smoked, signwritten as smart giant-sized advert and a trailer, chuck the muck in the trailer, and take the missues and the kids out shopping in the crewie, leave the trailer on the pavement for others to run into... ?
Customer's then happy, bound to get a better job than someone turning up outside with a battered old hack.... surely?

Dont forget the 22" rims Clive. You are right Clive. Just pose wagons and you would think we had huge oil reserves

Well I have a double-cab; I just wish i had a farm to drive it around on.
Now if I were a farmer with a double cab I'd go to work with a grin on my face every morning; God would be in his heaven and all would be right with the world; it would be an absolute pleasure to take out bails of straw, animal feed, fence posts or whatever in a VW Syncro Doublecab instead of whatever it is that a farmer usually does it in !
So the rosey tinted take on it is go for it; you'll love it, but be prepared to fall in and out of love along the way
When you find one; you'll get all the real help you need right here on Club80-90 Syncro; all we ask is we get to drive around your farm in return

Well said Mark, tis a grand vehicle for chucking stuff into, but as DH says, they are getting on a bit so can't take the hammering farm use may give, but there again.....will a modern vehicle?

Use mine most days for work,[10,000 Km in six months] never ceases to amaze with its versatility, yes there are highs and lows[new engine, alternator to name two] My advice is buy the best you can afford, and invest/upgrade when/where necessary. Much bigger grin factor than the average nissan navarra/L200 i knqw been there done that!

Oh theyll take the hammering alright, a lot better than many other vehicles, but when something does go wrong and you have to fork out for the new bits, thats when things get difficult.

I think you've been driving the wrong ones Clive!
