got a hightop 1600td with a broken engine...
thinkin about an upgrade...
vw or subaru!!!

How much spare time and money do you have??

Diesel - filthy stuff! and expensive. Go scoob and then go gas. I did (and are doing) just that!

If your bothered about money then wack an AAZ in.

If you have loads of money and love your hobby - then a scooby is one of your options to spend loads of cash.....

I respect people who spend the time and money putting scooby/alternative engines in their buses for various reasons - but dont tell me its cheap or stress free!

I heard it was £3k to get an LPG conversion for a scooby - is that wrong?

Aprox £1800 for gas (cheaper if you do it your self)

Its not all that much more than any other engine if ya know what ya doing!!! How much is a going aaz, then factor in all the derv bits you need if going from petrol, or even fitting a gti engine etc etc !!!

If an AAZ is done yourself (if you already have a 1.6td) its going to cost about a grand with an oil cooler.
Thats factoring in £600 for a running donor car.

It can be done a lot cheaper than that but whats the point. (There is a running AAZ in forsale at the moment with all the bits for £600)

True - if you havent got the diesel bits, your going to have to add another £200 - £300.

Dont get me wrong -i'd love a scooby engine in the van running LPG - but i havent got 4k upwards for the bits (assuming 2k for LPG, 2K for donor car and conversion bits).

The last conversion that i took an interest in cost a lot more than that i bet....

I'd be interested to see a shopping list for the scooby parts.

If you can do it your self I payed the following:


£150 for a 1992 legacy
£725 for conversion plate and clutch kit (tsr)
£20 for wiring diagram (kep)
£30 for exhaust bits
£20 coolant bits (pipes and bits)

TOTAL was £950 ish

I used as much as I could from the car as I could even down to re using the seats in the van, what was left of the car was sold or weighd in, total was £200 so I actually made on £50 profit on the car!!!
I made my own exhaust, coolant system, wiring etc, A lot of what is sold as must needed bits aren't needed, like intake trunking I adapted what was there and it fits nice, you don't need a reversed coolant rail! I used the subaru engine mounts and re used the original vw mount bar and welded it to fit, none of these things have failed yeat in nearly 5 years, the only fault I had was a dodgy fuel pump relay, original scooby one, and a dodgy spark plug!!!

Well, if you're not going to bother including service bits then this is my cheapest conversion:

aaz engine off a 8090 member: £250
spigot bearing £5?

I didn't have to make a thing as it all came off the jx engine
took a weekend to do it.
Conversion looks factory standard.

Before you admit I have won this pissing contest I will admit you ended up with a powerful engine and I ended up with a deisel!

Its a good little car that un!

Never include service parts are there an automatic expense what ever engine you have, Just pointing out if you have a derv all ready then your costs will be lower, but if you go from a petrol engine then your cost will be more! Im on a few lists at scrap yards for any stray boxer derv scooby lumps coming in but there fetching silly high money at the moment!

Blimey I looked away for a minute and look what happened!
Steve Shaw quoted me the same price to gas a n/a Subaru as a 2.1DJ.
And yes I do love/hate/love/hate/love this as a hobby. My current daily driver is the '95 SA 2.6i Going on gas in June
PS I just got fed up with the disproportionate amount of servicing that diesels need just to justify the slightly higher mpg and they are just so slow... Pence per mile, petrol + gas =

Change the oil and filter every 4-5,000 miles?

No spark plugs, no leads, no dizzy cap, no rotorarm?

As an alternative to the expensive Subbie howabout a VW 2E 8v 2.0 litre petrol.

You lost me there. They need less servicing than a petrol.

Anyway, scoobies are ace - i love them. But their not cheap or hassle free to install.

Its good to know that its only £1200 to gas them too ?
