Nigel is finally going to tackle the leaky push rod seals this weekend (the smoke plume is getting embarassing )

He hates doing any work on my van 'cos nothing ever goes to plan and always turns into mr. shouty man, so has anyone got any tips on how to get the job to go smoothly?

heads off or colapsable tubes?

Give us a clue.. what engine??

I'd guess its Aircooled......... 2L is easy... reletively speaking... just need new seals and rocker gasket unless tubes are damaged..
1.6ct....... same problems as wbx... as ricicles says.. either heads off or colapsible ones (not cheap)

2.0ltr air cooled need neither of those, just take it easy, remember how you took it apart and it will go back together the same way, if you don't undo the tappets then there is no need to adjust them when you put it back together, do not use any kind of sealant, just a bit of grease on the new seals to help them clip in and watch which way the retaining bar is sited in the rocker blocks and it sits under the pushrods not over to hold the tubes in place, give it all a good clean and put the tinware back.

Coz you will need the colapsible tubes which aint cheap (unless someone can remember where the cheap ones that fit were) or take the heads off, which is another set of problems...

Not sure if it's just my engine (2Ltr CU) or tubes (Original) but took me 3 sets of seals to stop the oil drip.

When I used the JK & GFS ones I got an oil leak. The csp ones worked a treat.

I was going to have a go at doing my seals this weekend too - mine's a 2ltr CU. Do I have to unbolt the rocker bar to change the seals, and if I do, do I need to reset the tappets? At the moment I can move my pushrod tubes on one side of the engine either way a couple of mm and there is a definate oil leak from that side!!

Yep, but it should go back with no adjustment required and on the 2ltr the pushrod tubes just pull out.

its 2l Aircooled - i have no Idea what letters (or how to find out what that bit is)

One last question from me if I may; I've left my Haynes at home by accident - I working in Germany at the mo - so I just want to be sure. Is it just, take off the rocker cover, unbolt the rocker arm, take out the long clip thing, pull out the tubes through the head, put the new seals on the end of the tube and then put it all back together? And put some grease round the seals to help it seal a bit more?

Yes.. but I wouldnt bother with grease as soon as the engine is hit it will be gone..

Clean the sealing areas of any debris, a smear of quality sealant might help, but ONLY A SMEAR, you dont want lashings of it on there... make sure the tubes are seated properly, use a nice rounded end handle of a screwdriver (or similar) to push them in.. make sure the pushrods are located in the tappets properly..

If only the later engines were so easy....

Cheers for that. Mine are currently loose and can be moved from side to side so it's deffo a job I need to do.
