Syncroswede is off to the Alps in his dub on friday, we were just checking over the engine and noticed after a bit of thrashing that the exhaust was glowing a bit!

What engine has he got?

It's a light pressure turbo 2.3 WBX. 170bhp 200ft lb torque.

Well that might explain it....

Still looks a bit hot mind...

then I really would get it checked out... if the exhaust IS really glowing........ or have you just got a luminous purple fettish

15 second shutter speed and a stainless exhaust is all it is!!

The photo was quite a long exposure so over emphasises the colour but the headers were glowing cherry red for the first 15cm out of the heads. I checked the idle mixture only the other day at my local MOT place and is bang on 2 + or - 0.5 so I am happy it's ok. Besides here's a picture of the LC8 950 V-twin I have in my bike on a test bed. Now that's glowing!

Idle mixture has nowt to do with higher rpm..

Is it being economical lately??

Nope, economy sucks as much as ever

It gives 20-21mpg generally and a bit more on on a run.

Dreading the fuel bill going to the Alps.

Are you saying that this glows at idle?

A picture of the same part iof exhaust in daytime would be useful, to see what we are looking at

That bike engine looks quite useful

The pictures were taken looking down through the hatch on a bog standard 2.1 with stainless headers in the dark with the engine held at 2-3000 rpm for a minute or so.

I've seen standard engines in planes, cars and bikes do this under normal use so not worried something's wrong.

Looks OK to me. Years ago at Tech College we used to have a Triumph 2.5 PI engine on the dyno that you could wind up until the headers glowed almost white!! It never did that engine any harm. It just goes to show how much energy the Infernal Combustion Engine wastes though.

This is the sort of engine on my wish list.


Bet those headers get cherry red underneath the wrap!

i am likeing that, i am trying to work out what the injection system is on it, any how a few years back on my drz400e i had a stainless exaust on her and on cold mornings the exaust would glow big time if i started it a kept it above 2000rpm for a min or so. looked impressive never gave me any greef, the normal mild steel header pipe never did it, must be a stain less thing.
