I am currently running a 1y diesel, until today I had never put a thermostat in. After running round for an hour conitinous bleeding the temp gauge is Reading about 2 needles past centre?
My old 1.6 d was in the centre
the thermostat is a standard VW one opening at 87*c is that to hot?
I have attached the cabling to the rear outlet of the engine??
It stays steady and holds that temp so are yours about the same??
Thanks all

do you have an oil temp gauge? as this is the inpotant one in my opinion, the water temp can go way past water boiling point due to the anti freeze/summer coolant that is added, on my van the water temp gauge was always bang on the led once it reached opperating temp once adian sorted out the sender for me, however about 6 months ago i changed over to a rev counter dash and now the needle is always sat a needle thickness or so below the led once it is at opperating temp, but the oil temp can be from 80degrees c up to 110degrees c yet the water temp stays the same just below the led. so i conclude that the water temp is not very accreate and cant be trusted, the oil temp is the one to watch in my opinion. i would not worriy too much on what you have said in this post as long as you have made sure that your cooling system has been bled corectly and that you have got all the air out the system,
