Hi, I`m looking to buy my 1st t25. I`m after a 1.9 DG. Can anyone advise what`s best - Automatic or manual. I have got my eye on 2 vans each with a different box and would like to know which gearbox is best (pros and cons of both really) Thanks in advance. jz

manual ... no brainer

1.9 autos are heavier on petrol consumption

2.1DJ is a better unit for Auto box

Thanks a lot!
Any other pros and cons of either if I decide to ignore the mpg issue?

2.1 Auto.
Love it.... so easy to drive in traffic.....
Can still get 27 mpg on a long run...

My old camper was a 1.9 DG Auto. Drove very well and I haven't noticed any significant difference in fuel consumption to the 2.1 Manual I have now.

ok, throwing something in here..

box goes wrong....what then?

Manual....you speak to Aidan cos he refurbs them
Auto??? Dunno

Put manual box in - long and complicated as nothing there for the hydraulic system.

Maybe worth asking around what the options for repair or replacement are.

Yes I must admit my auto box went on the M6 on the Friday evening of a bank holiday weekend. I'll not mention the recovery charge as it makes me too angry but sourcing a replacement box was a bit of a pain. Couldn't find anyone willing to repair the original one. Mind you, I wasn't a member of 80-90 back then. Got the replacement box from a vw scrapper just outside Leamington Spa. I often wonder why nobody's willing to repair them...... :?

Thanks you everyone!! Think I will probably go for a manual unless I find a 2.1 Auto at the right price?

Be interesting seeing how an auto would cope with some of the hills round here (Peak District/Derbyshire Dales) .... and the brakes

I have got a 1.9 DG auto and have been up Porlock and Countesbury hills on several occasions without any problems apart from the gutless engine! When coming down a hill you can select a low gear and keep it there. You can use an auto box like a manual, changing up and down as you wish, but that would be a bit pointless. The biggest problem is the 22 MPG!

I've had both, drove a 2.1 auto for 9 years went well and a pleasure for city driving, and you save on not having to
replace the clutch. Disadvantage, you cant push start an auto if the battery is flat, even on a steep hill, and you
loose a bit of power through the torque converter. I have a 2,1 manual now with a 5 speed box and love it too,
but took along time to get used to the gear shift placement of first being where second should be and second being
where first should be. happy van hunting. :)

manual every time for me , the vans are slower enough as it is without losing more power through a automatic gearbox,
