sorry if this has been covered before (i have looked tho)

i have a 89 1.7 diesel which had a full service and new pads all round a week before this happened.....

on a little jaunt to norfolk i pulled over (lost!!) and then found i couldnt get back into gear, it appears that the clutch isnt disengaging, saying that the clutch pedal feels the same a usual?

i turned off waited a few mins (1) and fired him up again, gears went in but felt a bit stiffer, finished the journey, started next day fine then 25miles from home i pulled into a service station and it happened again, this time resulting in a tow home.

my dad got it goin again?? (i think just by trying it a few times) took it to the garage today and up to now cant find anything wrong??

i decellerated from about 65 quite quickly both times it happened.

iv got a couple of ideas but im pretty much stumped.

When this happens do you find it very difficult to get it out of gear when the engine is running, but no problem with the engine stopped?

Does your van try to move forward when you are trying to select a gear?

If this is the case and you're sure your slave cylinder is travelling the full distance, and the clutch plates are not broken, your g/box oil is OK, your gearchange shaft etc is all OK, then I would suggest your spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft is on it's way out (It seizes on to the end of the spigot shaft causing permanant drive via the g/box input shaft) pressing the clutch will not stop it trying to drive.

If you do suspect the bearing, then it's a box out, flywheel off job.

Someone else may give you 1 or 2 ideas presently.
